Eugene, OR—To highlight the crucial importance of donated platelets, a retired factory worker from Ohio is donating platelets in every state in the Union. On Wednesday, February 10, Al Whitney will be in Eugene to donate at Lane Memorial Blood Bank, the 35th state on his list. Whitney founded Platelets Across America in 2007 “to promote platelet and whole blood donations for treatment of the ill” and uses his own funds and spare time to donate at blood centers across the nation. Platelets are a clotting component commonly used to treat cancer and leukemia patients, whose platelets have been destroyed during chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Without a transfusion of healthy platelets, these patients are at risk of fatally hemorrhaging. To date, Whitney has made a total of 646 platelet in thirty-four states and plans to accomplish his mission of donating in all fifty states within the next year. Letter From Lane Memorial Blood Bank
